Summer of 2020

Summer of 2020

I have always been a fan of bicycle camping in the USA, ever since I read " wat heb ik nu aan mijn fiets hangen", the story of a Dutch guy who crosses the USA in 1976, the year where the first Bikecentennial took place. In 1998, given a 3 month time slot of opportunity, I rode the Northern Tier, from Seattle, WA to Bar Harbor, Maine. A life changing event!

I have been riding my bike in the US on several occasions, last of which was RAGBRAI 2019 with my youngest son, together with a small cycling club from Iowa.  This year was supposed to be a repeater of RAGBRAI, but this turns out differently.

No RAGBRAI, no visits to far away countries, just the biking part is possible. So this year will be different, and to make it a little bit more fun, I decided to ride the TransAm, 4215.2 miles across the United STates, aroute from the Adventure Cycling Organisation. To make it corona-proof, I will do it virtually. Every mile I cycle, I will project on the Transam (this will probably keep me motivated to keep cycling in familiar surroundings this summer). The more I cycle, the faster I can cross the United States.

Another aspect of this trip will  be to look out for Dutch heritage along the way. This can be familie names, names of object along the way, stories, etc etc. A little bit like one of the oddest museum I have ever visited, Ripley's believe it or not

So will you be able to tell what's fiction, fake or fantasy? I don't know....let's just look at it as a fun thing to do
